Here is an acrylic painting of white flowers on a black canvas. This is the first acrylic painting I ever did on a black canvas. Although it was a bit different than starting on a white canvas, I found this just as much fun to do.
The paint:
Opting for a heavy body paint truly enhanced the joy of painting for me. At the beginning of my artistic journey, I underestimated the crucial role that paint quality and viscosity play in the creative process. Additionally, I experimented with a clear acrylic gel medium, only to realize that it introduced an unwanted glare on the painting. Despite the piece's stunning appearance in person, capturing a photo without distracting light reflections has proven to be quite a challenge.
Blank Canvas:
Working on a black canvas for the first time brought a new level of excitement to my painting experience. It was intriguing to switch up my process and focus on layering over negative space instead of the usual positive space.
This was the start of it. I started off with a reference image. I found that I became more focused on matching the photograph exactly rather than build the illusion of flowers. I eventually tossed the picture and just had fun with it. Let's look at the next few stages:
